There are many resources for examining what Reiki was, is and can be but here I'm keeping it simple. Ki, chi, prana - the energy that is present in everything, everywhere - is our life force and a strong flow maintains our health on all levels.
A Reiki practitioner has been 'attuned' to the energy (Taggart King has interesting things to say on this topic) and operates as a channel, drawing it down and passing it on to the recipient. As a treatment it is not a cure, but a therapy which opens the recipient to achieve balance, flow, peace...whatever is the highest good for them at the time.
Animals are very receptive to Reiki and have no expectations so a placebo effect is impossible. Dogs are free of pretence, illusion and deception. Their interaction with us is always honest and open. Reiki is perfect for them. It would be even better for us if we could be more like a dog.
My personal experience includes giving Reiki to my own dogs and cats after surgery, during times of mental distress and even just as a boost to well-being. My 18 year old cat has been attuned himself and has truly 'magic paws'!
I have also spent time working in my local rescue centre giving Reiki to traumatised and/or sick dogs. The results were always a pleasure to behold; from relaxation and sleep in a frantic, anxious dog to a new home for a dog seemingly doomed to a life sentence in kennels! As highest goods go, that's a great one.
Dogs usually - and often in spite of dreadful treatment by humans - want to connect with us. They meet us at least halfway, they're open in their hearts, minds and bodies so it's easy to pass on healing energy and they may soak up their fill of it in ten minutes. Or they may enjoy a good energy tickle for an hour!
Here's the bottom line: Reiki is about intention and love. It may be a hugely spiritual, miraculous energy that brings about specific change OR it may bring about relaxation through the simple act of touch. And healing is always easier when you're relaxed. Either way, we win.
If you think your dog would benefit from Reiki and would like me to help, please email me and we can talk. Every dog is different, every situation is different. I love to treat hands-on but can also send Reiki over distances.
